Where to look for Fossils at Hastings?

(Collecting from Hastings)
(Collecting from Hastings) - 2003

As with most locations, A good find at Hastings is often subject to beach conditions. The ideal times to visit Hastings is after a storm with high water, during the winter where scouring has taken place and after persistent and heavy rainfall.

Most of the fossils at Hastings are for most of the year covered up with shingle. A good scour will clear this shingle and allow one to search the foreshore for bones, shells, teeth and plants.

(The Foreshore) - 2003

Fossils can generally be found anywhere along the foreshore at Hastings, scan around the areas with clay and examine the rocks. Most of the bones and fish are found in very hard rocks but of a particular zone, marked by colour and texture. It may take several trips to Hastings before you will begin to start finding some finds. A good high tide should turn over many of the rocks and the movement of material often reveals fossils otherwise hidden under rocks and shingle.

(The Clay at the bottom of Scree Slopes) - 2003

Many small teeth can be collected from the clay, especially at Rock-A-Nore itself. Search the scree slopes in the clay and mud, especially after heavy rain. Fossils are washed out and often just waiting to be picked up.
